Again, 100 things
Yes, more out the door! Gifted away 7, which includes 3 lengths of fabric and the equivalent of 4 rolls of film. This time was a big deal. I went thru my stash of pictures which haven't made it into the photo albums (since 2nd child was in grade school, hmm). I have decided to create separate albums so the kids won't have to do it in the future, but will keep them with me. I thru out pictures measuring 10 inches high equally approximately 25 rolls of film with about 36 pictures to a roll. I was hoarding bad pictures. Small items that still carry weight.

update on 100 thing . . .
. . . out of the house! 11th attack. This one includes a re-purpose, gift away (a dry sink), and selling of 11 books. I actually loved the dry sink and it would be good in a potting shed but I am swimming in furniture.

A trip to the dump, half the truck loaded with household garbage. The other half with stuff set aside from my 100 things challenges. Also a couple sacks to Goodwill. I have been working outside a little here at my house and spent an afternoon at my daughters. She wanted help getting beds ready after the tilling was done. One bed was so fluffly, I went barefoot. I felt like a rebel, the top was sun warm and then wonderfully cool underneath. What a great day!

Keeping busy
I have had some productive days! Yeah! This week I have emptied 2 more boxes in the basement and redistributed a bin in a 3rd floor so it can be put to better use made bone broth from 9 chicken carcasses )from the freezer). Today I made a list (a short one) and crossed off every line. Library, vacuum, wash canning jars that have been stored too long (with dust and bugs), repack my 3 new bins down to 2 (for now) and start filling the 3rd with canning jars. One of the 5 pieces of furniture also went to Habitat for humaity. Happy dance! This year is starting out much better than my efforts of last year.
More sacks of 'stuff' to the charity AND another 100 'things' out of the house. Must have the garage sale this year, for sure. I need the designated sale stuff out of the house, too.

A positive start to a new year
100 items out the door challenge #8, delivered to the 2nd hand truck up the street, the garbage part down in the basement all tidy and waiting for the next trip to the dump. I am happy! I am also determined to tackle my goals, it feels so good to simplify my surroundings (also hard).

2013 review
My successes (in a minor way) are few. I completed 100 things out of the house only twice this year. It is HARD to get rid of memories which I have done with some struggles. The big pieces are still in the basement and the garage sale didn't happen. Bummer! I did get to the dump 3 times this year which is good since these trips are mostly downsize loads with little day to day garbage. Goodwill trips added up to approximately 6 trips (I keep a sack ready to fill at all times, if a decision to get rid of something is made then it goes into the sack).
The skills list is also going to stay the same. That's right, other than reading an article on sourdough nothing was accomplished here either. Living happily with thrift is actually something I already practice, getting others in the house on board is another problem which I can't solve for them. Kombucha was brewed continuously but can stay on the list because I want to up the amount brewed and figure out how to do a second brew in the bottle. Maybe a physical list is needed as a daily reminder.
'To Do' list (supports goals) for 2013
- To Habitat for Humanity X 1
- 100 hundred items out of the house x 2
- Save money
- Sort/clean out living spaces
- To the dump x 3
- Re-pack anything left in basement
- Have a garage sale

It will never happen fast enough . . .
. . . but my community had a town sponsored spring clean event at which you could dump for free. I don't mind the dump fees but it is the electronics that can cost money to get rid of. Since I don't have a truck available my little car was filled with 2 medium sized TV's, 2 old CPU's and 2 monitors. More out the basement. Now I need a truck for 3 dressers and a desk. My husband said NO to putting them out in front of the house (it's done a lot around here). Maybe I will put one out and see what happens!

Progress
100 things challenge number 7 out the door. Woohoo! I delivered a trunk full to the goodwill truck, today (and took a truck load to the dump, last week, this includes regular garbage also). I have a few big pieces for my son to take to the Habitat for Humanity store that sells construction leftovers (the profits support the building of houses for low income families).
You would think that everything is pretty much gone! NOT. We have here an accumulation of STUFF over many years. And I'm not counting everything individually, for instance a stack of papers as one count, every 2-3 magazines as 1 count. Some things I am not currently using but can't let go are quart canning jars and gardening equipment. I have 2 bench seats from a van we sold, a desk, a chest of drawers (tall), a bulky bedroom vanity and a lowboy. All in the basement taking up more room than I realize because of not really "seeing" them. They need to go and I need to decide if they have any value because furniture is good to have for a garage sale. I am keeping another desk; it is delicate, a ladies desk and it was my grandmothers. We also have an old tube radio from the 30's maybe and I don't really want it anymore but hubby has to be in on that decision!
What you don't know is that the daylight basement is huge with the single garage in it (no walls to separate it from the basement. This house was built in 1939.
Spring is calling! For over a week the song birds have found their voices and are multiplying. I noticed the grass in the field is 6 inches high and sparkling green, the crocuses are blooming (my most favorite spring flower). The morning sun is warm and inviting and a few sunsets havebeen colorful. I love the rebirth of spring!

A good way to start . . .
. . . the new year!
I did a '100 things to purge from the home' weekend challenge! The 6th one. It's fuuny, when down to the last few items to look for, I must get a bee in my bonnet because my keep boxes get revisited and purged some more. All good because I can't keep everything! I have decided not to do the sack a day which sounds like a good idea but the daily motivation was not there. It is amazing the amount of stuff that accumulates over the years and with the moves every 7 - 10 years the unpacked boxes have grown, these are what I have concentrated 75% of the purges from. I get excited after each challenge (rushing out to deliver the goodwill sacks). Yeah! The dump runs have to wait for a truck full (went last week) because it's wasteful otherwise (I have a list of bigger items to go on the next run), generally most everything goes to the goodwill.
This is not always the easiest process. I have let go of many things that would have a good use in the future. What is even harder is the things that are in the toss pile that get taken back out, by my husband ("it's useful to me"). After years of sitting in garages and basements much of our stuff is mildewed, had rats or mice in the boxes (these have been OLD houses) or become junk thru non-use and becoming outdated. Some I have hid under piles but most of the rest has been mine. A did go thru the "can't decide, set aside pile and to goodwill more stuff did go!
Anyway, my basement is a mess BUT progress is being made! I am feeling lighter and daylight can be seen.

Review 2012
On my to do list, the dump runs and sacks hauled to the goodwill were a huge success! Only three out of the six were successfully worked on: sort and clean, sort basement, 100 items (thrilled with this one). This list will stay the same.
'To Do' list (supports goals) for 2012
- Save money
- Sort/clean out living spaces
- Sort basement for the dump
- Re-pack anything left in basement
- Have a garage sale
- 100 items out of the house x 5
The new skill list was a bust!! The only accomplishment is the kombucha! The rest will stay on my list. I love to learn new things but I think 2012 was a "in a rut year". I need to work on this. On the positive side, I enjoy helping my grandgirls to sew, they are so eager. Devoting more time to their projects needs to be more consistant though. Also going to try 30 days, 30 sacks = declutter, simplicity. A different appoach from "One hundred dollars a month" blogger. Hopefully this is more productive to pick a smaller are like a closet or a corner of a room. The 100 items was a push to see stuff and I would overlook those I really don't need.

Season of busy
I have been working in the basement again gathering another 100 things to get out of the house. This is the 5th set I have done! Yeah, progress! Alas my basement looks like a hurricane swept thru. A garbage run would be a good start for the next set and the back corner will be completely cleared. The truck is not running right now or a trip would be scheduled immediately. Unfortunately, my kitchen table is a mess. Again. I must try to clear it and the dining room table (college study area, mess).
I have been sewing a LOT! We had two more 24 hour sew at my daughters, giving support and getting a lot done. A homemade Christmas this year and yes, a bare minimum spent in the (box) stores. I am so thrilled to keep the commercialism out of the holidays this year. After the holidays some pictures will get posted (in case the curious want to peek).

To the dump . . . . .
As a final part of my 100 things to get rid of project comes to a close for the items waiting for a dump load, I went TODAY! I love going to the dump, a weight gets lifted (in my mind anyway). After loading first my project stuff and some from a sorting months ago, I added my regular garbage (plastics). Our city only has pick up for plastic recycling and that is the bulk of my garbage since everthing else can go to the recyling center.
The kitchen table is bad again, it's me every time who gets to clean off everybody elses junk!

Update on the List
Another 100 pieces of clutter, bye, bye!
Mostly stuff to Goodwill, some to the garage sale pile, some garbage. My garbage pile is big enough to go to the dump now (I have an unfinished basement and put NO perishable in it), I keep a designated corner for this because running around the house "looking" for last minute garbage, because the truck isn't full enough, is counter productive. When I am in the area of the dump the recyclables are a side trip to keep them under control and it's free! My pile of stuff to sort (can't decide what to do with it) and reassess, is shrinking because I don't really need them. This is feeling so good that walking into a room becomes an automatic look for more clutter. Yes, it is a slow process. I am trying to see the clutter for what it really is!My day was busy with sweeping the main floor, clearing another surface (in my bedroom), working on 2 others, clearing the floor of my closet and storing some pantry items, and starting a new sack for donations. I have let some of toys build up in a corner (the K'nex) so sorting and putting them away took some time. And of course, some laundry and dishes.
Thank you, darling daughter, for the beautiful header for my blog!!

Stuff and Clutter!
I posted for the year end (2011) my disaster areas, today after counting the surfaces with clutter on them, something must be done. Ten surfaces (tables, desks, etc.) in the kitchen dining room, living and bedroom. This doesn't count my sewing room because every time I organize it a bomb goes off and disaster reins again! After counting the mess I immediately followed up with cleaning off two of the surfaces. Not only do I not get help but when something is put away, a gremlin comes along and put the stuff right back where I cleared it off of (kitchen)! Two more surfaces do exist but they belong to another 100%, the ten belong to me or are a community mess. I also have one more shelf in the kitchen to clean out for better storage.
I have been making Kombucha for 2 months now and have a good balance of brewing now, it is giving me a 2 cup bottle a day to drink without flavoring it. I like it very much this way and enjoy the hint of apple and sourness, refreshing!

Good Food!
I made ham bone and beans today! Brings back memories of Mom's soup, so good! I boiled the bone (with plenty of meat left on it) with an onion and garlic for an hour then took it out to cool for shredding. Then I cooked the Anasazi beans, they cook in about 1 hour and originate from the Southwest. Nice, huh! When the beans were done, I combined them with the meat, broth and a packet of Knorr Vegetable soup mix simmering for 10 minutes. OMG, so good! My soup is more like a chowder, very thick.
For brunch, I made Bannocks (Scottish pancakes) using sourdough and rolled wheat flakes (I didn't have oatmeal). The wheat didn't absorb the moisture well and so I will try again with the oatmeal. Good but could be better! Both these meals left me full and satisfied for hours with no heartburn that I have been experiencing lately. Flour, cream of wheat, sugar so far seem to be the culprits.
I have a challenge on Pinterest, getting rid of 100 things. Five garbage bag liners full, 4 grocery bags and 1 box went to the Goodwill box, Yeah! Going to work on another 100 items!

On the ending of 2011 . . . .
With so many days to accomplish chores my short list should be easy (plus some). I have fallen a little short. The kitchen table is still a disaster and so is my bedroom. I cleaned out drawers though, they accumulate stuff at an alarming rate. Now in the basement, which is also still a disaster, I have been working on. With three dump runs this year a lot of boxes have been gone thru and eliminated, also many full boxes have been donated to the Goodwill (I have 4 grocery sacks ready to go right now) and many trunk full runs to the recycling center (it's free) with boxes of papers from schoolwork to IRS papers. Nothing has been re-packed and I did not have a garage sale (many boxes to sell). So I guess my list will have to remain in effect and be added to!
A big change for me this year is the 'no-poo' for clean hair. Surprise! my hair is very clean. Every other day is perfect, I think that it would be too drying. I use a Tablespoon of baking soda and water paste rubbed into the scalp and a Tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of warm water to rinse. I rinse well with water and let dry, nobody can tell. My hair feels good and silky, I never have trouble combing it out (it's curly). If I am having a bad hair day on the skipped day a rinsed with very warm water works well.
I have never believed in New Years resolutions, Goals are much more attainable. At New years you might rashly make a promise and then fail, this happens with regularity (promises are meant to be kept). Goals come up at any time and can be revised, life is not static and we need to be adaptable.

Cupboard, Spring clean
Yes I know, a little late for spring cleaning but it's been so cold around here. I even started a fire in the basement because all the rain has left the house feeling a bit damp, turning on the furnace gets hot in minutes, so a fire it is.
I found a questionable bag of rice with holes and dust inside so I have pulled all food off of 3 shelves so far to wash down the shelves, also rinsed with a little vinegar. Then wiped all the bottoms of the boxes and containers, aired them and restocked the shelves. I have 4 more to go. Also tossing old and questionable packages, it's been a while. Time seems to go by so fast and I haven't been into the very back of the cupboards or rotated the food out. Feels good to get another area up to date, clean and refreshed. This is certainly not a hard job, just one that gets put off till another day.

Portable playhouse
I decided to sew a playhouse for my grandkids. It's something I saw in an article years ago for a 'garage' for a boy and it slips over a card table. I am using scrap pieces and making each side a different color (various shades of green and yellow. I don't have the 4th side complete yet, it a will have a back door of sheer material. The girls tried it out, though and LOVED it. J was an animal growling around and napping in the 'house' and V got very excited just going back and forth thru the front door. I am adding laces and a mailbox and probably something hanging off the rod on the inside to stuff toys into. This will go outside nicely, too. Possibly with a floor blanket made of denim, I've made a picnic blanket of denim that turned out well and was very washable .
Took a load of recyclables to the dump, a TRUCK FULL. At least 2/3 of the 8 sacks of mixed paper were from basement cleanup. Old school papers (my kids informed me of throwing them right in the trash and not even checking them out). Old national geographic that became too musty to keep (they are great for school projects). Old cardboard from tossing the contents and more! I am jumping with joy! So check off another on goal list.
Dreams of the future took another hit last week, gets a little hard to think about, let alone write about. I sometimes think that not everyone is on board for the future. Having a future. Saving is such an integral part of having dreams otherwise let's all just sit in the corner and vegetate. Or just not dream.....

Plans to can (jam)
| from summer 2010 learning session - fun day! |
To Do List:
Been working in the basement again. Whenever we get to move (sooner than later, hopefully), we absolutely cannot take all this stuff with us (years of accumulated stuff). Most of it not used. We all need to consume less and give of ourselves more. Anyway, we went to the dump again (3rd time recently) and working on more! Found more for garage sale stuff. Just need to buy some storage totes, anything in boxes seem to absorb moisture or attract bugs which then has to go the dump because of mildew. We have had so much rain in the last 2 days, I found a second leak in the basement, in the wall of the foundation. Not good!
